Before we do the therapy, we don't really know why or what motivates the person's habit or behaviour and what we've learnt over years of experience, is that the sub-conscious is a child-like part and that there can be simple explanations for certain behaviours. When a client comes to see us, through the hypnosis, both therapist and client find out why they have the problem which gives power to the client to find out how to resolve it.
When you have a compulsion, it is very difficult to turn it off unless you understand the motivating factor behind it. Hopefully, these case histories will give you a glimpse into why this technique (The Austin Technique ) is so effective.
N.B. Client confidentiality is crucial to our practice, so any information that could indicate identity has been removed.
Food:
A client came to lose weight with us and I asked her about her eating habits. In the process, I discovered that she had no sensation related to eating between her mouth and her stomach and that the feelings that related to how full she was were diminished. This rung alarm bells, so in hypnosis I did regression to the first time she had suppressed feelings in that area. In hypnosis, what was revealed was that when she was a tiny baby, her neighbour had made her a bottle of milk which had been scalding hot. The burning sensation in her throat had overwhelmed her and in self-protection she had disconnected from the feelings. In the process, she had cut off all sensation that related to eating and appetite. With this information, I was able to do therapy in the session to help her overcome the fear and to help her re-connect with the area.
Over the next few weeks my client learnt to connect with her throat and stomach and to respond to her need for nourishment and to stop once she picked up the sensation of fullness. So, for the first time in her history, she was eating slowly as well as leaving food on her plate (instead of the usual bolting until it was all finished). She enjoyed new sensations, such as the coolness of an icy drink on its journey to her stomach.
My client lost 5 kilos and is now very happy with her shape and size.
Drugs:
A client came to us with a large cocaine habit. We did regression and discovered that his habit had been stimulated by the death of his mother. It turned out that he had never been able to shake the identification as the 'black sheep' within the family. As she passed away she told him that she had been completely wrong about him. Her last minute acknowledgement of her mis-reading of him stimulated a huge amount of rage and feelings which had nowhere to go. His method of coping was to take large amounts of cocaine.
Through therapy within hypnosis, he was able to resolve the emotions towards his mother and in turn, to gain a sense of peace. His compulsion to take cocaine as a means to suppress emotions was no longer present.
Another client who had a severe cocaine habit had lost a significant family member at an early age. After her death, she was never spoken of again and he had no opportunity to express his grief or process his feelings. As he grew up, he developed a cocaine habit as a means of suppressing those un-processed emotions. Within hypnosis, he was able to express his grief and to come to terms with what had happened. The out-pouring of emotion and the completion he found meant that he gave up his use of cocaine.
Performance Anxiety:
We had an actress client who had a tendency to dry up whilst perfoming her lines. This went back to when she turned up to perform shortly after having a nasty illness. She was still affected and forgot her lines. However, this was not the primary event. Years before, she had been abroad and the country was invaded whilst she was there. This stimulated a large amount of fear and anxiety. The same fear and anxiety was re-awoken when she forgot her lines after her illness because, to the subconscious, she was in a similar situation of fear and exposure and being out of control. Thereafter, the mind reacted exactly the same way when she was in a performance situation. However, through the therapy and by acknowledging what had been the stimulus, she was able to gain rationality and control in the situation, so she was able to perform without anxiety.
N.B. With twelve years (between us) of treating clients in this way we have many case histories, some of which are very graphic examples of how we work. We are in the process of adding them on to this page so please feel to return for another look.
